That was after he had accused the woman, Madam Enam Manya of witchcraft, which, he said, she had used to prevent a family member from being selected to join the national team, the Black Stars.

The suspect, Patrick Nuamah, 38, a cargo truck driver, said owing to his grandmother’s witchcraft, his cousin, who was very good at football, was not able to make it to the World Cup.

The police said Nuamah accused the grandmother of bewitching his cousin whose name he gave as Annor Nwonzu, making him lose all his skills in football, for which reason his grandma did not deserve to live.

Family woes

The police added that the Nuamah also accused his grandmother of being the main cause of all their woes and that if his cousin had been able to maintain his football skills, he would have been one of the Black Star players selected for the World Cup and that would have improved the economic well-being of the family.

According to the District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr John F. Dzineku, when the police got to the scene, suspect Nuamah had bolted.

Eye witness

He said an eye witness in the house told the police that Madam Manya came to her in tears claiming that her grandson had entered her room and used a broom to beat her.

Realising the distress and sad looking posture of the old lady, she comforted her and asked her to either go back and take a rest or wait in her house while she (the eyewitness) reported the incident to the family head.

Grandma Manya chose to go home and take a rest while the eyewitness reported the issue to the family head.

According to the district commander, on hearing the report, some senior members of the family proceeded to the old lady’s house to console and to assure her of their support.

“But before they could get to her house, Nuamah had already strangled his grandmother and left the scene,” he said.
