So far, 15 of the vehicles have been distributed to beneficiaries under the MASLOC special projects scheme at a ceremony in Wa.

The three-wheel vehicle, which carries three persons, including the driver, is already a regular means of transport in the Northern and Upper East regions.

The beneficiaries were made to pay an initial deposit of GH¢1,500 and they have agreed to pay the remaining GH¢17,000 over a 36-month period.

The amount includes insurance and processing cost.

Social intervention

The Chief Executive of MASLOC, Mrs Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, said the scheme had been introduced as a back-up to the regular taxi and ‘trotro' transportation system.

"It offers an economical means of transport over relatively short journeys, with an efficient fuel consumption rate. For many users, it has become an important source of income," she added.

According to her, MASLOC would soon introduce the cargo type of the three-wheel vehicle to the area.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, said the vehicles would only be useful to beneficiaries if they maintained them regularly and adhered to procedures in their use.

He thanked MASLOC for the intervention and asked the organisation to increase its allocation to the region to engage the unemployed youth.
