The equipment, which forms part of a component under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Acceleration framework (MAf) programme, includes manual resuscitation machines, anastasia machines, ultra-sound scanners with video printers and fetal heart detectors.

The MAf programme, being sponsored by DANIDA, aims at improving on Goal Five of the MDGs.

Inspecting the equipment at Spintex in Accra yesterday, the Minister of Health, Mr Alexander Segbefia, said the focus of the MAf programme was to improve the country’s target of reducing the maternal mortality ratio.

He said currently the new world targets under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pegged maternal deaths for countries at 70 per every 100,000 live births, adding that it would be difficult for Ghana to meet that target from its present 319 per every 100,000 births if nothing was done about the situation.

He said the equipment would be distributed to health facilities in all the 10 regions where it was needed most to ensure that the country met the new maternal and newborn targets under the SDGs.

The Manager of the Medical Stores of the MoH, Mr Bernard Asamany, who is also the Deputy Director, Logistics and Warehousing of the ministry, said the equipment was the first consignment of the first phase of the MAf programme.
