MyHelp–YourHelp Foundation donates GH¢85,000 relief items to Nsawam female prison

The MyHelp–YourHelp Foundation has donated relief items valued at GH¢85,000 to the Nsawam Female Prison in the Eastern Region as part of its Easter outreach and eighth anniversary activities.

The donation, made last Saturday, included medical supplies, sanitary products, a laptop, a printer, food items, toiletries and other personal hygiene materials.

The items are expected to support healthcare delivery, improve inmate welfare and aid administrative work at the facility, which houses about 131 female inmates, including pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and elderly prisoners.

The outreach was held under the theme “Behind Bars, But Not Bound.”

Presentation

Presenting the items at a short ceremony, the President of the Foundation, Mr Nicholas Cofie, said the Easter period made the visit more meaningful, as it served as a reminder of the need to remember people in prison.

“Crime does not discriminate,” he said. “By the grace of God, some of us are free outside, while others are confined within. Our duty is to extend compassion and contribute to improving their living conditions.”

Mr Cofie referred to Hebrews 13:3 and Matthew 25:36, saying the Foundation sees prison outreach as a responsibility guided by faith and conscience.

During the visit, the team held a devotional session with the inmates, where they shared scripture, prayers and words of encouragement. Using the stories of Joseph, who rose from prison to leadership in Egypt, and Nelson Mandela, who later became President of South Africa after 27 years in prison, the team urged inmates not to lose hope.

The team also toured the facility’s vocational units, including the catfish and poultry sections, and pledged to continue supporting rehabilitation programmes aimed at preparing inmates for life after incarceration.

Call for support

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, the Deputy Director of Prisons, Mrs Victoria Adzewodah, described the gesture as timely and said it showed concern for a group that is often overlooked.

She appealed to the public to support ongoing projects at the prison, including the construction of an Inmates’ Property House and a Diagnostic Centre, which require additional materials and logistical support to complete.
