NAIMOS Taskforce arrests two illegal miniing suspects at Subrisu in Western Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) Taskforce, on December 8, 2025, carried out a coordinated raid on illegal mining sites at Subrisu in the Western Region, leading to the arrest of two people who were engaged in a suspected unlawful mining activities.

According to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the suspects were found actively operating two excavators and other mining equipment along the Subri River at Bekwai Subrisu.

Their activities, together with those of other galamsey operators in the area, had caused severe pollution of the river and extensive degradation of surrounding farmlands and forest reserves.

During the operation, the NAIMOS team dismantled several metallic gold-trapping platforms used by the illegal miners and destroyed three heavy-duty water pumping machines to disrupt further activities. The taskforce described the raid as necessary to halt the ongoing environmental destruction and protect vital water bodies.

The two arrested were said to be Chinese nationals. They have since been transported to Accra and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for further action.

NAIMOS noted that the Subrisu operation forms part of its ongoing surprise nationwide crackdown on illegal mining, aimed at restoring order and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources. The taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying enforcement efforts to ensure a more responsible and sustainable mining sector.
