The 11-million Euro project involves the designing and construction of a new water treatment plant and the laying of new transmission and distribution lines.

Phase two of the project will begin immediately after completion of phase one and it involves the rehabilitation of the existing water treatment plant and connection of the new transmission and distribution lines to the existing reservoir.

Although the plant is supposed to produce and distribute 800,000 million gallons of water daily, it currently produces 500,000 gallons of water due to the deterioration in equipment and infrastructure.

Minister Inspects Project

This came to light at a media briefing after the Minister of  Water Resources, Works and Housing,  Alhaji Collins Dauda,  inspected the progress of work at the project site.

He explained that the expansion and rehabilitation works had become necessary because the plant was constructed as far back as 1962 and had never been renovated.

“The population of the  catchment area the NWTP is supposed to serve has increased so much over time, and therefore, it has to be expanded and the old system rehabilitated,” he added

Catchment Area

Alhaji Dauda said the NWTP was currently serving six communities. These are Nsawam,  Adoagyiri, Kutunse, Medie, Dobro and Ntoaso with a total population of approximately 40,000 people.

According to him, an additional 12 communities would be added to the NWTP’s catchment area upon completion.

These additional communities include Amasaman, Pokuase, Piobo, Oparekrom, Avaga, Wangara Ahodwo, Akwamu  Kpobiman, Sempe nos 1 and 2, and Shikpontele.

“These communities have difficulty accessing potable water and this is my concern as the sector minister,” he added.
