The Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, who announced this in Accra yesterday, said the NVTI would be provided with GH¢10 million every year by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) for the next five years to support the training of the youth.

Beneficiaries

Beauticians and hairdressers, fabricators, masons, plumbers, among others, would benefit from the package.

“I have committed that every year, with resources from the YEA, GH¢10 million be allocated to the NVTI for the next five years to support the training of young people, particularly junior and senior high school graduates,” Mr Iddrisu said when he interacted with staff of the NVTI at its head office in Accra.

That was after he had sworn representatives of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Ministry of Education into office as additional members of the board of the NVTI.

He indicated that the inability of the NVTI to deliver in the past year was the result of budget constraints and poor releases from the government.

“Indeed, as I speak with you, I have forwarded your budget, which includes the GH¢10 million, to the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President for their consideration,” he said.

The minister expressed the hope that the support being offered by the government would help train many more young people in various skills.

Advice

Mr Iddrisu asked the NVTI to make judicious use of the money.

“If you want to advertise for a job, don’t hesitate; put it out publicly, make it competitive, determine a good winner and let the good winner execute it,” he said.

He also urged the institute to strengthen its internal audit control measures to avoid a repetition of the problems of the past.
The Director of the NVTI, Mr Bismark Amponsah, promised the minister that the institute would perform to expectation, adding, “We will not disappoint you; we will be very transparent. Be assured that we will do far more than you expect.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the Board of the NVTI, Dr Malcolm Josiah, had thanked the government for the planned support.
