Binta Sadiq, 38, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Wa Regional Hospital on Saturday night after she sustained gunshot wounds in the latest skirmish by the Dondoli and the Jejeyiri communities in a long-standing dispute over a parcel of land.

Two houses were also burnt down during the violent clash.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Edmund Nyamekye of the Upper West Regional Police Command, the police had launched an investigation into the immediate cause of the fresh violence between the two communities.

No arrests yet

He indicated, though, that there had been no arrests so far.

ASP Nyamekye said the violence broke out between the two communities about 11 p.m. on Saturday, about a month after violence erupted between the two communities involved in the land dispute which is pending before the High Court in Wa.

He said in last Saturday’s clash, the police succeeded in bringing the situation under control within hours.

The police had maintained their presence within the two communities since the latest clash, he said.

Leaders of the two communities had pledged to promote peace among their people when the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, and his deputy, Dr Mohammed Musheibu Alfa, led a delegation of the regional security council on a visit to the two communities in the wake of last month's clash between the communities.

During that incident, houses and vehicles were burnt, while eight people, who suffered injuries, including gunshot wounds, were hospitalised.

The Dondoli and Jejeyiri communities are said to be descendants of the same father, but years of disagreement have left them divided.
