Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius awards Dec 12

The maiden edition of the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius awards, dubbed ‘Evening With African Geniuses,’ would be held on Friday, December 12, 2014, at the National Theatre in Accra.

A statement signed by Mr Enimil Ashong, Executive Director of the Centre for Communication and Culture, said the awards would be conferred on persons who had made outstanding achievements in a number of fields, graded into three categories.

Categories

The Lifetime Achievement category recognises people of outstanding merit, aged 40 and above, and whose artistic creation, scientific feat or innovative ideas had stood the test of time for not less than 10 years or who have exhibited qualities that exemplify the African virtues of humanness and altruism.

The second is the Young Icons category for younger prodigies aged 39 or younger and who have consistently worked at or come out with an artistic or unique creation or scientific invention for not less than five years.

Great achievers who have passed on would be awarded in the Posthumous category.

An overall criterion, confined the search to any Ghanaian of truly outstanding achievement whose works had impacted society to the extent of them becoming national or international references.

The call for nominations was made from August through to October, 2014 with nominations coming from Ghanaians all over the world.

Specialised committee

The board of governors of the awards scheme, under the patronage of Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Omanhen of Essikado, had constituted a specialised committee to undertake a shortlisting of the nominations submitted by the general public.

The statement said the committee’s shortlist would be subjected to the final approval of the board of governors, after which the final list of awardees would be made public.

Fields of human endeavours in which awards would be given include entrepreneurship, science and technology, innovation, information and communication technology, medicine and film.

The others are dance, writing, drama, music, visual art and design. The rest are innovation in traditional leadership and language.

The Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Award scheme is an initiative of the Centre for Communication and Culture which is affiliated to the African Union and works in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

Meanwhile, the board of the awards scheme has expressed its gratitude to its sponsors including the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Stanbic Bank, Bank of Africa, Innolink Security and Confidential Printing Limited as well as media partners including the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL),Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), TV3 Network and TV Africa.
