Parliament vets Vanderpuye,Ackon

Mr Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the Minister-designate of Youth and Sports, has pledged to liaise with other stakeholders to build, remodel and reshape sports to make it attractive for corporate bodies to sponsor it.

He said the focus was to identify and develop young talents in schools and other areas. He again pledged to give due consideration to the lesser known sports to recapture Ghana's past glory in athletics.

Nii Vanderpuye was answering questions  when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament  in Accra on Monday. He expressed concern that the country’s concentration on the management and promotion of sports to the neglect of developing the sports.

 

"It is only when you develop that you can make strides. We want to make sure that we go back to the ABC of sports.

We have to look at the young talents and train them. It is important that the talents are developed on a continuous basis," he said. Nii Vanderpuye was of the view that the various stadia must be named after sports men and women and not administrators.

He pledged to build sports infrastructure and indicated that the District Assemblies Common Fund would be the main source of funding.

Mafia

Nii Vanderpuye said if  indeed there was a mafia at the ministry, he would face them head on.

"If there is a cabal, they will not meet Nii Lante Vanderpuye," he said.

Tenure of sports ministers

Nii Vanderpuye said that when a person stayed at one position for a long time, that person acquired enough experience.

On the rate of changes of ministers of sports in the country, he said, the President had the right to appoint and disappoint ministers.

Nii Vanderpuye said he was a team player, and indicated that he would harness the human resource to succeed.

Ashanti Regional Minister-designate

Taking his turn at the vetting, the Ashanti Regional Minister-designate, Mr John Ackon, pledged to forge a united team of security officials, political leaders and traditional rulers to bring a lasting solution to the impasse between the indigenes of Agogo and the Fulani herdsmen.

He said the rift between the Ashanti Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Mr Kofi Boakye, and the  Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North, Mr Kwadwo Baah Agyemang needed to be resolved so that they could work together towards resolving the issue.

Mr Ackon pledged to deal with illegal mining in parts of the region.
