Police arrest 4 persons over Asamankese shooting incident

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested four persons in connection with a violent shooting incident which occurred during the burial and funeral rites of six family members at Asamankese in the Eastern Region.

The incident, which happened last Sunday, October 26, 2025, left six civilians and three police officers injured after violence erupted near the Chief’s Palace at the funeral grounds.

According to a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Eastern South Regional Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, the police received intelligence that some individuals were transporting guns and cartridges into a room close to the Chief’s Palace.

The statement said police personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they arrested suspects which included Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam (29), and Buaben Richard (25).

Police also retrieved one single-barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives.

However, during the arrest, some irate youth attacked the police officers with stones and other hard implements, injuring three officers on their heads and hands.

The mob also damaged the windshields and side glass of two police vehicles.

The youth reportedly blocked the Asamankese–Akroso road and fired guns indiscriminately, claiming that the bereaved family intended to bury their deceased relatives in the royal cemetery — an action they opposed.

In the ensuing violence, six people, identified as David Odame (28), Musah Gyakweli (29), Patrick Ofosu, Obeng Emmanuel (18), Asamoah Sey (18), and one other person yet to be identified, sustained gunshot injuries. All victims are currently receiving treatment at the Asamankese Government Hospital.

Police say calm has since been restored in the Asamankese township, with intensified patrols and surveillance to ensure law and order.

“The public is assured of a robust security strategy in place to protect lives and property and allow residents to go about their normal duties,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the four suspects were in police custody assisting the police with  investigations.
