Police lament involvement of juveniles in crime

The Nkoranza Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Joseph Owusu, has expressed concern about the increasing number of criminal cases involving juveniles in the municipality.

He stressed the need for parents to live up to their parental responsibilities to help address the problem and warned that any juvenile who would be arrested in connection with any criminal offence would be severely dealt with, to serve as deterrent to others.

DSP Owusu, who expressed the concern during an interaction with the Daily Graphic at Nkoranza, said there had been a number of theft cases in the Nkoranza town and its surrounding communities in recent times.

According to him, there had been reported cases involving some schoolchildren who were reported to have broken into stores, kiosks, and computer and mobile phone laboratories and made away with a number of goods from such places.

DSP Owusu, therefore, said there was the need for the security agencies to stand firm and take pragmatic measures to address the situation.

The municipal police commander bemoaned the practice where opinion leaders and elders of the communities visited the police stations to plead for the release of criminals whom they actually knew were bad lots among the people and said not until such negative practices were stopped, it would be difficult to control the crime wave in the communities.

DSP Owusu cautioned students to be wary of peer pressure and avoid the company of friends who would want to drag them to engage in social vices.

“The Nkoranza Police would not spare drug addicts, as well as drug traffickers but rather deal with them accordingly since their behaviour and activities are threats to the security of the people” DSP Owusu stated.

“Traditional rulers, assembly members and unit committees should organise trust worthy and committed youth of the communities to serve as ‘watch dog’ volunteers to assist in arresting criminals”, he added.

DSP Owusu appealed to the public to feel free to volunteer information on suspected criminals to the police so that such people would be arrested from their hideouts to enhance security in the municipality.
