Police rearrest alleged rapist

An attempt by a teenager, who was standing trial at the Takoradi Circuit Court for allegedly sodomising a six-year-old boy, to escape from custody failed when he was rearrested by the police.

On the pretext of attending to the call of nature, the accused, Shaibu Issah, took to his heels after he realised that his police escorts were off their guard.

With the help of bystanders at the court, the suspect was later apprehended by the police.

In addition to facing trial for engaging in unnatural carnal knowledge of a minor, the suspect will also be charged for attempting to escape from lawful custody.

 Issah pleaded not guilty,  admitted to the offence and attributed it to the work of the devil during interrogation by the police.

 

The sodomy case

According to the prosecution, the sexual encounter between the accused and the victim occurred when the victim went to defaecated in the bush near Kojokrom, in a Sekondi/Takoradi metropolis after he had closed from school.

The accused followed the victim into the bush and dragged him into a wooden kiosk where he forcibly had sex with the six-years-old boy and threatened him not to inform his parents about the sexual encounter.

Issah was arrested by the police after the victim’s father lodged a compliant at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Sekondi that a neighbour had witnessed the accused defiling the victim through the anus in a bush.

In his statement, the victim told the police that the accused had consistently defiled him on 10 different occasions and that the suspect normally bought him food after the act.

The prosecutor of the case, Chief Inspector Fuseini Yakubu, said the police issued a medical report to the victim’s father and that the report indicated that the victim had indeed been penetrated.
