Hours before the Blacks Stars played their first game in the 2014 FIFA World Cup last night, the President urged all Ghanaians to throw their full weight behind the team to excel in the tournament.

He was delivering a message of goodwill to the team in an interview with journalists at the Flagstaff House, Kanda, yesterday.

President Mahama was happy that the euphoria was catching up with the soccer-crazy nation as a number of vehicles were flying the national flag in Accra.

He, however, called for a step up of the momentum as the competition wore on.Ghana, he said, was a religious nation and that could tell positively on the team's performance.

President Mahama, who responded to questions from journalists, said the message he had received from the Vice-President from Brazil indicated that morale was very high in camp.

He expressed the hope that Ghana would cut the United States to size to lend credence to the Stars’ resolve to advance to the next stage of the competition.

Reputation
He said the Black Stars had a reputation to protect, judging by their incredible performance in their two previous appearances at the World Cup.
"You cannot afford to disappoint Ghanaians," the President told the team.

Ghana had previously defeated USA in the last two encounters in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups in Germany and South Africa, respectively.
Although the President would not make any prediction in terms of scoreline in the group matches, he was confident Ghana would triumph in their matches.

World Cup not about superpowers
President Mahama stated that the World Cup was a matter of football and not anything about superpowers and developing countries.

"Football is not about superpowers or nuclear weapons and that is why we, as a small developing country, will defeat all our opponents in Brazil, beginning with the USA," he stated.

The President was also confident that all the other African countries at the World Cup would perform well.
