Ghana ends mourning period as flags fly at full mast
Flags across the country have been restored to flying at full mast, ten days after President John Dramani Mahama directed that they should fly at half mast following the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two government ministers.
In a statement issued by the Presidency Communications on Monday, August 18, 2025, the government directed all public institutions to return national flags to flying at full mast with immediate effect.
This followed the conclusion of the state funeral held in memory of the deceased.
The statement said President Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and the government had been deeply moved by the support shown during the period of mourning.
It said the government had taken note of the sympathy messages, the presence of mourners at the funeral, and the assistance offered to the bereaved families.
The statement also recognised the contributions of security chiefs, service personnel, political leaders, members of the diplomatic community, traditional authorities, clergy and corporate bodies in providing what it described as a dignified Ghanaian burial for the victims.
“As we return to the duties of #ResettingGhana and building the Ghana we want, let us remain united in prayer, comfort one another, and continue to support the families affected by this tragedy,” the statement said.
The government added that it was mindful of the collective grief the nation had endured and prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace.
