President John Dramani Mahama swore in seven ministers of state to office yesterday and charged them to make humility their watchword.

He said it paid to be humble and urged them not to lord it over the people.

The ministers are: Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, who is going to the Interior Ministry; Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Ministry of Youth and Sports; Mr John Alexander Ackon, Ashanti Region and Mr Kweku Ricketts Hagan, Central Region.

The rest are: Mr Albert Abongo, Upper East Region; Madam Mavis Ama Frimpong, Eastern Region, and Mr Abdallah Abubakar, Northern Region.

They swore three oaths — official, allegiance and secrecy — which were administered by the President.

Social democrats

President Mahama reminded the ministers about the social democratic principles of the NDC government and asked them not to depart from them.

In that context, he said, programmes such as the school-feeding programme and the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) must be taken very seriously by them.

"Ghana is a nation in a hurry with the young people very expectant,” the President told the appointees.

He said everything must, therefore, be done to support such young people to develop their lives successfully.

Elections

President Mahama told the ministers that they were going into office in an election year when security was key. He,  therefore, urged them to provide the necessary support to promote the maintenance of security.

Response

On behalf of the new appointees, Mr Bani thanked the President for the confidence reposed in them and promised that they would not disappoint him
