Akufo-Addo celebrates Mfantsipim School’s victory in 2024 NSMQ
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated Mfantsipim School on its triumphant win in the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), celebrating the hard work and resilience that led to the victory after a ten-year wait.
In a Facebook post, the President praised the Cape Coast-based school, saying, “Warmest congratulations to the gentlemen from ‘The School,’ Mfantsipim, on emerging victorious in this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz competition. It is well-deserved, and I look forward to welcoming them to Jubilee House.”

Mfantsipim School clinched the title in a closely contested final, scoring 47 points to edge out St. Augustine’s College, another Cape Coast institution, which finished just a point behind with 46 points. Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS) took third place with 33 points.

The victory marks Mfantsipim’s first NSMQ title since 2014 and adds to their previous wins, with the school first claiming the title in 1999.

The winning team received gold medals and a cash prize of GH₵70,000, while St. Augustine’s College was awarded silver medals and GH₵50,000, and Keta SHTS took home bronze medals and GH₵35,000.
The NSMQ, which saw a record 157 schools competing in this year’s national championship, is an annual event designed to promote the study of science and mathematics among senior high school students in Ghana. Organized by Primetime Limited since 1993, the competition aims to encourage academic excellence and foster a scientific mindset in students.
In the NSMQ’s history, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec Legon) holds the record with eight championships, followed by Prempeh College with five wins, and St. Peter’s Boys’ SHS with three. Mfantsipim’s recent win is a testament to their dedication and preparation, as they rejoin the ranks of Ghana’s top academic institutions.
President Akufo-Addo’s commendation highlights the importance of the competition in nurturing Ghana’s future scientists and mathematicians. He emphasized the students’ remarkable performance, noting that he is eager to officially host the champions at Jubilee House to celebrate their achievement.
