Prez Mahama in Addis Ababa for AU Summit

President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last Wednesday for the 24th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

The theme for the summit is, "2015, Year of women empowerment and development towards Africa's Agenda 2063". 

A statement issued by the Flagstaff House Communications Bureau said ahead of the main summit, President Mahama yesterday met Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS and addressed the AU's Peace and Security Council on the sub-region's recommendations for tackling terrorism on the continent. 

Before the AU Summit, the President, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS, had given a hint of a proposal for the establishment of a regional force to fight Boko Haram.

The proposal received the support of German Chancellor Angela Merkel when the President paid a state visit to Germany recently.

Other activities 

While in Addis Ababa, President Mahama will also chair a meeting of the AU High Level Committee on African Trade.

On Saturday, he will present the committee's report to the main assembly.

The summit will elect a new president for the union, discuss the theme, review the AU's response to Ebola  review and adopt Agenda 2063. 

The leaders will further attend the 22nd Summit of the African Peer Review Forum of Heads of State and Government.
