Prez Mahama's mother to be buried Friday

Scores of well-wishers trooped to the residence of President John Dramani Mahama at Cantonments in Accra yesterday to commiserate with him on the death of his mother.

Hajia Abiba Nnaba, 85, a devout Muslim, died at the Trust Hospital in Accra last Tuesday.

The Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, told the Daily Graphic  that  the remains of Hajia Nnaba would be interred in her hometown of Busunu in the West Gonja District in the Nothern Region tomorrow.

President tweets

Later yesterday morning, the President confirmed the death of his mother from his twitter account 

 “Abiba Nnaba (1931-2016). Fare thee well “Mami”.  I’ll forever miss your gentle dignity,” he tweeted.

Suspension of tour

The death resulted in the suspension of the President’s ‘Accounting to the People’s tour of the Greater Accra Region.

The four-day tour, which started last Tuesday, was due to continue yesterday.

However, the Flagstaff House sent a message to the presidential press stating that the tour had been cancelled.

It added that new dates would be announced later.

Condolences

Meanwhile, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a message, expressed shock and sadness at the demise of Hajia Nnaba.

In a statement yesterday, his spokesman, Mr Frank Agyekum,  said Mr Kufuor, who is currently in Stockholm, Sweden on an official engagement, called the President to console him and the entire family.

“Former President Kufuor prays that the soul of Madam Nnaba will rest in peace,” the statement said.

In a related development, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has expressed shock at the demise of Hajia Nnaba.

The whole CPP family, led by its 2016 presidential nominee, Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, National Chairman and Leader,Professor Edmund N. Delle, and the rank and file, join the nation to mourn with the bereaved family.

A statement signed by Professor Delle and issued in Accra yesterday, said “the CPP share in the grief and pain of the family” and urged the President, and the family to take consolation in the fact that Hajia Nnaba paid her dues to Ghana and mankind.

The statement said Hajia Nnaba raised sons and daughters with one becoming the President of the Republic of Ghana.

The CPP also urged the family members to stand firm in the face of the trying moment and unite to give a fitting burial “to our mother, Madam Nnaba.”
