That, he said, required that Ghanaians would rise above partisan politics and ethnocentrism and work towards national cohesion.

The President said this in a speech read on his behalf by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, at the 70th anniversary celebration and thanksgiving service of the St Joseph’s Anglican Church at Kaneshie in Accra.

“Let us be inspired by the national agenda of a ‘Better Ghana’ in which we can together build a prosperous and a more productive country for our people and the generation yet unborn,” he said.

President Mahama called on all Ghanaians to put their shoulders to the wheel towards national development and empowerment.

Forget the past

“As we approach a new year, let us all put behind us the past and strive to face the challenges that confront us as a nation head on,” he added.

He said God would not fail the nation “if we close our ranks and unite our strengths and face the challenges head on.”

He called for continuous prayers for the presidency, the executive, the judiciary, the legislature and all government functionaries for God to grant them the strength, wisdom and understanding to handle the affairs of the nation.

President Mahama said on the occasion of the thanksgiving service of a reputable church such as the Anglican Church, that had coincided with the celebration of the birth of Christ, it was appropriate for the church and the nation to renew their love for each other and the country.

“Let us resolve to do away with the negative things we do in our political, Christian, social, traditional and every sector of our national lives that set our nation back,” he added.

He called on all to “renew our individual and collective commitments as we walk on a path of hope, transparency and accountability that would rekindle our fortunes as a nation and set us onto the path of socio-economic development and prosperity in the coming years”.

The President, through the regional minister made a cash donation of GH¢5,000 to the church, while the minister also supported the church with GH¢2,000.
