Prez swears in two envoys

Two new envoys were sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama at the Flagstaff House yesterday. They are Lt Gen Joseph Henry Smith, who is heading to the United States of America, and Mr Moses Bukari Mabenga, designated to serve in Angola.

President Mahama said he had no doubt about the ability of the two to excel in their new endeavours.

"I have worked with both of you and I know your capabilities," he said.

He said Ghana had long and fruitful relations with the two countries where the envoys were going to serve and charged them to build on such engagement.

Angola, as a leading producer of oil and gas, had played a part in Ghana's energy development, he said.

The President said Ghana had worked on a number of bilateral programmes and projects with the USA.

He said the recent signing of the Second Compact of the Millennium Challenge Account was a further testimony of that collaboration.

Mr Mahama also mentioned the Africa Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) which allowed Ghana access to the US market.

The AGOA, he said, resulted in an increase in Ghanaian exports to the US market.

Touching on the fact that there was a large population of Ghanaians in the US, the President said there was the need for the nation to tap from their talents.

He, therefore, urged Lt Gen Smith to explore that area for the benefit of the nation.

Responding, Lt Gen Smith thanked the President for the confidence reposed in them and promised not to disappoint him.
