It has, therefore, launched an appeal for funds from corporate Ghana, benevolent organisations and philanthropists to contribute towards the awards ceremony.

The President of the foundation, Nana Ama Serwaa Bonsu, who launched the appeal for funds in Accra, said the purpose of the award was to appreciate the selfless and dedicated efforts of the midwives, who, as women, had similar aspirations as the foundation in terms of maternal health and infant mortality.

 Improvements

She said evidence showed that there had been significant reduction in the rates of maternal death and infant mortality due mainly to efforts of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Ministry of Health (MoH) and hardworking midwives.

She said a number of initiatives and frameworks had been developed and implemented by the MoH and the GHS to address the problem of maternal health and infant mortality, which were commendable.

She added that the foundation wanted to also contribute its quota to ending maternal and child mortality with the institution of the award scheme for midwives.

 Achievements

The foundation, she said, was formed in 1999 and comprised queenmothers from all over the country who shared in the hopes and aspirations of  Ghanaians.

She mentioned the objectives of the foundation to include advocacy of women and children’s right, consensus and peace building, good governance and grass-roots participation of women, as well as public education on topical issues.

She enumerated some of the achievements of the foundation to include donations to the aged, orphans and other vulnerable children, widows and persons with disabilities as well as advocacy on sanitation, cholera, Ebola and HIV.

Nana Bonsu appealed to all to support the foundation to identify and reward the hardworking midwives, adding, “It is our prayer that no woman will die while giving birth.”
