Refugee students trained in leadership, entrepreneurship

Sixty-five students from the various refugee camps pursuing undergraduate programmes in universities in the country have ended a workshop on leadership and entrepreneurship in Accra.
The two-day workshop was aimed at empowering the students with leadership and entrepreneurial skills to make them useful to their communities after they graduate from school.

The workshop, dubbed “DAFI scholars’ workshop”, was held under the auspices of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Christian Council of Ghana on the theme: “Leadership, Democracy and Entrepreneurship”.
Speaking at the workshop, the Chief Executive Officer of Flowers School of Technology and Management, Mr Michael Flowers, said the purpose of the workshop was to harness the leadership and entrepreneurial potential of the refugee students by equipping them with practical training.
“We need to harness the potential of these young people so that they will be relevant to their home countries after they return or be employable in their country of residence,” he said.

Democracy
For his part, a lecturer at the Volda University College, Norway, Bjorn Gunnar Tafjord, said there was a correlation between democracy and entrepreneurship.
According to him, Africa had an infant democracy and there was, therefore, the need to share experiences with African youth.
‘‘In Norway, we have a long tradition of democracy. It is more than 200 years; so we have experience. We believe that democracy has some challenges; but it also has something to offer,’’ he said.
