Regional Maritime University introduces vocational programmes

The Regional Maritime University (RMU), Nungua, has introduced vocational programmes in marine engine, mechanic and basic welding and fabrication to cater for junior high school (JHS) dropouts.
The programme is aimed at equipping JHS dropouts with the technical know-how to gradually become professional seafarers.

The Vice Chancellor of the RMU, Professor Elvis Nyarko, announced this at the launch of the university’s maiden alumni homecoming and fundraising event in Accra.
He said as part of the programme, MODEC Engineering Company has established a welding diagnostic and certification centre to support the training programme.

Homecoming event
The homecoming event, on the theme: “Promoting the Contributions of RMU towards Maritime Education and Training in the Sub-region,” begins from September 28 to October 4.
Activities lined up for the week-long event include: World Maritime Day Celebration, Full Parade of Cadets, commissioning of oil and gas facility, Departmental and Photo Exhibition and Job Fair.
Prof. Nyarko said since the university was established, efforts had been made to introduce programmes that would transform and empower the youth to become useful to themselves and society.

Alumni support
He called on past students of the institution to extend a hand of assistance towards addressing the infrastructural needs of the university.
Prof. Nyarko said the rationale behind the event was to bring together all the past students of the university and afford them the platform to discuss some of the development agenda of the institution.
He said the event would also be used to solicit financial assistance to empower the current management to undertake certain key development facilities.
