Lawrence Tetteh retracts and apologises to University of Ghana over HIV comment
He made the comment on Wednesday, October 24, 2024 during a discussion on the morning show. Rev Tetteh mentioned that a high number of UG students were living with HIV, an issue he blamed on alleged promiscuity on campus.
His remarks sparked public outcry, which compelled the University of Ghana to demand an apology from him for making the unsubstantiated remarks.

The university questioned the basis for his comment, pointing out that his allegations could lead to unnecessary stigma and fear.
The university stressed that only scientific testing can confirm one's status and that such a dangerous hypothesis cannot emanate from rumours or hearsay.
"HIV status cannot be determined through counseling or prayer but only through validated scientific methods," UG stated in its statement, warning against misinformation and claims not supported by data.
Rev. Tetteh on October 29, 2024, issued a statement to apologise to the university and its stakeholders for the comments he made.
He said his remarks were never intended to bring the university into disrepute or traumatise and stigmatise the students.
Rather, he said, what he meant was to raise awareness over broader social issues burdening young people throughout the entire nation.

Rev. Tetteh explained that his utterances were guided by his practice as a counsellor, where young people often opened up to him on personal issues.
He therefore gave the assurance that his major preoccupation remains the welfare of the youth and social issues approached with tact and responsibility.
