Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko named Acting Director General of NCA
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The NCA confirmed the appointment on January 23, 2025, through its official website.
Rev. Ing. Fianko is an electronic communications engineer with over 20 years of experience in radio frequency spectrum management, telecom and broadcasting regulation, policy development, and ICT industry research.
He has also worked extensively in teaching, publishing, and public speaking.
In 2022, he was elected to the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), representing member countries for a four-year term (2023–2026).
Since joining the NCA in 2004 as a National Service Person, Rev. Ing. Fianko has progressed through the ranks to hold key leadership roles. In January 2024, he was confirmed as Director of the Engineering Division, where he managed the planning and oversight of the radio frequency spectrum for telecommunications and broadcasting services.
He also served as Chairman of the Significant Market Power (SMP) Operations Team.
Beyond Ghana, he has contributed to regional and international telecommunications projects and served on technical and regulatory committees for the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His expertise has supported countries such as Benin and The Gambia.
From 2010 to 2016, he served as Secretary to the Digital Broadcasting Migration Committee (DBMC), leading Ghana’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. His work included developing DTT receiver specifications, which were later adopted as standards by ECOWAS.
He holds a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a Master’s in Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University, UK, and an MPhil in Applied Business Leadership and Management from Universidad Católica de Murcia, Spain.
A member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Rev. Ing. Fianko is also a Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, a published author, and the founder of the evangelistic outreach ministry, Nkwa.Life.
He succeeds Dr. Joe Anokye as Acting Director General of the NCA.
