The Municipal Director of Education in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), Mr Yaw Fosu Dankwa, has underscored the importance of Science and Mathematics in national development.

According to him, the two subjects were key to the advancement of every nation because no meaningful development could take place without the application of Science and Mathematics.

He therefore, urged Ghanaian students to take their studies in the two subjects seriously in order to help in the development of the country.

“Science and Mathematics bring about technology which is the result of research findings accrued through the ages. If every now and then, we make strides in the two subjects, we can make life more comfortable for ourselves, the nation and mankind,” he said.

Mr Dankwa made the recommendation at a science fair that was organised by the municipal directorate of education in Accra.

He said the fair was to prepare students in the municipality towards an inter-regional Science, Technology, Mathematics, Innovation and Education (STMIE) programme slated for the Labone Senior High School in Accra from July 31, 2016 to August 5, 2016.

The programme

The  STMIE programme seeks to instill skills of innovation, creativity and imagination in Ghanaian children in order that they may have a better future.

According to the Science Coordinator at the Directorate of Education in LEKMA, Ms Berthy Buah, STMIE was also meant to strengthen the study of Science, Technology and Mathematics among Ghanaian students.

She said the programme was basically designed for junior high schools and senior high schools across the country. It is to also offer them opportunity to interact with the scientific community so that they become encouraged to come up with their own innovations.

She said the primary focus of organising the programme was to encourage girls to take up the study of Science and Mathematics considering that most girls in school were not interested in the study of the two subjects.

Ms Buah urged the students who would be attending the fair to produce ideas that were new and capable of being selected for the regional STMIE camping.

“The best three concepts would be selected to represent the district at the camp,” he said.

Mrs Buah said the programme had helped a number of students in the municipality to become sharply innovative and others to also discover their hidden talents.
