The second Lady, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has inaugurated a community centre complex for the people of Avegagorme in the Agave Traditional Area.

The centre was constructed at a cost of GH¢122,000 at the initiative of the Avegagorme Youth Club, with sponsorship from the Ghana International Women’s Club (GIWC).

It will serve 18 communities and villages in the area.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu, Mr Mensah Woyome, and the MP for Ashiaman Constituency, Mr Alfred Agbesi, each pledged 100 plastic chairs to furnish the centre. The Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council also pledged GH¢1,000 to the people to help undertake the second phase.

In her inaugural address, Mrs Amissah-Arthur commended the youth of the area for their high level of self-help spirit and asked them to form a managing body to oversee the maintenance of the edifice.

She said a good maintenance culture, if cultivated and nurtured locally, could ensure that many projects would last longer without any component of foreign exchange involved.

The second lady thanked the GIWC for its support to the community, noting that it was the second time support had come from the club to the community in the provision of essential services.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, said the government greatly valued the development of infrastructure in rural areas and would ensure that critical infrastructural projects and other facilities were provided to every community in the country.

He said the provision of those facilities underscored the creation of an enabling environment for the socio-economic transformation of districts and the nation as whole.

The President of GIWC, Mrs Helen Appah, said the project was an acknowledgement of the spirit of achievement and accomplishment of purpose by the people, adding that the club selected projects that were of benefit to needy adults and children in communities.

She said the club had sponsored many projects around the country and expressed the hope that the community centre would be of great service to the people to enhance their living standards.

The President of Avegagorme Youth Club, Mr Raphael Gunu, said although the area had suffered apparent neglect over the years, the youth were not discouraged but united to pool resources to undertake projects such as the extension of electricity to the area and the provision of water closet toilet facilities in the village.

The youth leader said he felt “embarrassed, sad and ashamed” of the bad nature of the road and said the road must be tarred as a matter of necessity.

He said the community centre would be used as a resource centre for training women and traders on record keeping, as well as book-keeping and handicrafts.

However, the MP for the area, Mr Woyome, assured the people that the road project would be tackled in fulfilment of the promise made by the President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, to the people and that it was a priority road project earmarked for the Volta Region.

The MP for Ashiaman, Mr Alfred Agbesi, who chaired the function, said the government alone could not deliver all development projects but through a combined effort with the people. He, therefore, commended the people for their self-help spirit.
