Stop discrimination against women — Dr Nkansah

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Lydia Nkansah, has called for a stop to all kinds of discrimination against women, especially those in academia and career-development programmes in the country.

She said although the country’s constitution was against the discrimination of women, a lot more needed to be done to realise that dream, adding that women should first be treated as human beings with equal human rights and capabilities, as competence was not determined by colour or gender.

Dr Nkansah made the call at the opening of a three-day women’s conference of the University of Cape Coast chapter of the Distance Education Students Association in Kumasi.

Empowerment

The conference, which was on the theme: ‘Empowering Women to take up challenges of the Global World,’ brought together women who are members of the association and those in academia to address and advocate an equal opportunity for both men and women in academia and career development.

Dr Nkansah indicated that the provision of equal opportunities to both men and women could well position them to contribute to solving major problems related to the society and  the world at large.

She urged authorities in decision-making positions to help remove all barriers, especially those that were gender-related, to give equal opportunities to both men and women, pointing out that since Ghana was a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it was incumbent on the government to create the enabling environment to empower women and encourage them to take their rightful place in society.

Dr Nkansah said a lot of women were rising up to the challenges of the global community, with some taking charge of key positions in various countries, including Ghana.

She added that if more opportunities were created, the desired and much-trumpeted equality would be achieved.
