She mentioned that  it was necessary to support female porters, popularly known as kayayei, to integrate them into mainstream activities for national development and called on corporate organisations to play their roles in that respect.

Ms Mintah made the statement when she provided financial support for a vocational centre for kayayei at the “Kayayei House” at Mamobi, a suburb of Accra. The centre is to train disadvantaged girls in dressmaking and other vocational skills to make them economically independent.

Training the youth

She stated that training the youth in vocational skills was important to harness their potential for the socio-economic development of the nation and added that it was necessary to support underprivileged girls to lead comfortable lives and also take positive steps to address their challenges, such as peer pressure, which could not be ignored.

She said her organisation would be glad to work with the Mamobi Kayayei Vocational Centre to ensure that the girls benefited from the IT training that it would offer them to help them realise their dreams and ambitions.

The Communication Director of the Pamela Bridgewater Project, Bruce Misbahu Bulmuo, expressed gratitude to Ms Mintah for her support and appealed to the government to help create more opportunities for more women to excel in various fields of endeavours.

He presented an artwork painted by a beneficiary to Ms Mintah in appreciation of her support to the Pamela Bridgewater Project, which assists kayayei and their children with programmes through education, advocacy and protection.
