Two organisations donate to children with disability

Two disability-friendly non-profit organisations, Samuel Wellington Botwey (SWEB) Foundation and Always Praising the Father (APF), have donated various items to some persons with disability (PWDs) at Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region.

They presented 10 wheel chairs to parents of about 15 children who are physically challenged at Manso Atwere, where SWEB had piloted one of its research works on the needs of parents whose children are physically challenged.

Apart from the wheel chairs, they were also presented with assorted games and study materials estimated at US$2,000.

The items were received from Joni and Friends, based in the United States (USA), through APF.

Presentation

The Programmes Co-ordinator of the SWEB Foundation, Mr Sarko M. Sulla and the Executive Administrator of APF, Mr Joel Quansah, who made the presentation to the parents, emphasised the need to provide support for PWDs in the country.

In separate remarks, they indicated that about 140 wheel chairs would be presented to PWDs in Cape Coast and Takoradi very soon, and advised the beneficiaries to properly maintain the items and use them profitably. They also called on other organisations to come to their aid.

Nana Kofi Tawiah, who represented the Atwere Traditional Authority and Mr Kofi Nti, a representative of the Ghana Society of Persons with Disability (GSPD) in Amansie West, received the items on behalf of the parents and expressed gratitude to the two bodies for their benevolence.

Partnership

The partnership of SWEB Foundation and APF began in 2015 when the two presented a number of wheel chairs to PWDs in the East Mamprusi District in the Northern Region.

Also in August 2015, the APF organised a family retreat at Abokobi in Accra in which the SWEB took part, creating the platform for parents whose children were physically challenged to interact and learn from one another and how they had managed to cope with the difficult situations with their children.

The two are yet to organise another week-long family retreat in August this year in Kumasi where physiotherapists, counsellors, psychologists and social workers would help the participants go through psychological rest and reduce emotional stress among parents whose children are physically challenged.
