As part of the programme, the two organisations have organised a two-day training on breast and cervical cancers for some nurses in Kumasi, under a School Breast Health Education Programme.

Oncology skills

This training would professionally equip them with both theory and practical basic oncology skills necessary to educate senior high school (SHS) students about risk factors of breast cancer, prevention strategies, treatment options, and proper ways of doing self breast examination.

The workshop, on the theme: “Be Breast Cancer Aware, Not Scared”, was attended by 20 nurses selected from the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions.

It was jointly organised by DHL, BCI and Peace and Love Hospitals in Accra and Kumasi, under the “School Breast Health Education Programme”, to also provide opportunities for the students to be screened clinically for any suspicious signs and symptoms of breast cancer and refer suspected cases for further evaluation at appropriate health facilities.

Participants
Addressing the participants, the President of BCI, Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai, said creating breast cancer awareness in the country was challenging, and called for increased private/public sector collaboration to achieve the set goals.

Dr Wiafe Addai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace and Love Hospitals, commended the DHL and the Education Ministry for their immense support, saying that this noble venture would definitely increase the knowledge of breast cancer in the country.

The Country Manager of DHL Global Forwarding Ltd, Mr Paul Opoku, pledged the organisation’s continued support for the training, pointing out that the health of women, the embodiment of society, should not be toyed with.

He said in addition to the outreach programmes, DHL would assist with the provision of equipment and furnishing of regional offices of BCI to be established.
