UCC ventures into income-generating activities

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) will soon begin operating a commercial filling station to generate income as government subventions continue to dwindle.

The venture is one of many other commercial projects to be undertaken by the university to enable it to survive.

The university is already into detergent and sachet water production.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor D.D. Kuupole, explained that “as a result of the dwindling subvention, the university receives from the central government; we have had to embark on a number of income-generating activities in order to obtain supplementary finances to support our activities and programmes”.

Prof. Kuupole was speaking at the fourth session of the 48th Congregation of the university in Cape Coast last Saturday.

More Ventures

Prof. Kuupole also said the university was working on injecting some capital into its carpentry shop and block-making ventures to generate more income.

He indicated that various departments of the university were engaged in activities that would help improve the knowledge and skills of farmers to enable them to increase their production and enhance their livelihoods.

He added that the Department of Animal Science had also embarked upon the utilisation of palm kernel oil residue as feed for poultry and pig production to improve the livelihood of palm kernel oil producers, who are mostly women, while farmers in the Ekumfi District had also been trained in organic farming.
