University of Ghana, General Electric sign agreement to support needy students

General Electronic Ghana (GE), dealers in electrical appliances have signed a $100,000 agreement with the University of Ghana (UG) to support 25 to 50 fresh brilliant, needy applicants from the 2015 academic year, for a four year period.

Eighty percent of the scholarship funds is mainly to support would go to underprivileged, but brilliant students offering Applied Sciences and the remaining 20 percent would fund an annual excellence awards for the students who distinguished themselves in their various disciplines.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor said the partnership was in pursuance of the University of Ghana's vision to create equal opportunities for all qualified applicants to gain access to tertiary education in Ghana.

Professor Kwame Offei, Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana jointly signed the agreement with Mr Leslie Nelson, Chief Executive Officer of GE.

University’s vision

According to Prof. Offei, the agreement is in with UG's vision to become a world class research intensive university with diverse talents to help improve the economy.

The scholarship, according to him, followed a discussion with the company's last year which resulted in aplan to develop a framework for a financial aid programme for UG students in relevant areas that build Ghana's capacity in the oil and gas sector.

"We will continuously seek creative ways to enhance service to students and as well reach out to those who might not go through their programme successfully without some financial aid", he said.

He mentioned that the cost of education had been rising and the government had not been able to deal with it, hence the need for all stakeholders to help to provide quality education to brilliant, but needy students.

Mr Nelson, Chief Executive Officer of GE, also said his outfit will continue to support and fund the scheme to enable it grow.

"GE as a company has for the past years been yearning to develop talents and build capacities of the youth in the tertiary level and therefore challenge graduands to come up with innovative ideas to develop society", he stated.

He urged graduands to be creative and desire to be entrepreneurs who will in turn create jobs to make majority of the youth remain in the country to contribute their quota to national development.

The application for the scholarship aid would commenced in August 2015 after which qualified applicants would be selected in November.
