Water, sanitation project for Akyem Abenase
A Ghanaian non-governmental organisation (NGO), Community Livelihood Support Organization (COLISO), with financial assistance from six Belgian partners and Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has initiated a GH¢250,000 water and sanitation project at Akyem Abenase in the Eastern Region.

Belgian partners
The project involves the mechanisation of boreholes for the solarpowered water system and installation of six public standpipes in the town, in addition to the provision of a public toilet.
The Belgian partners, namely Flemish Partnership for Water Development, DEME4life Foundation Fund for Development Cooperation (FOS), ABVV Algemene Centrale, Antwerp and Ghana Council, Belgium, are providing GH¢230,000 for the project, while Mr Oppong Nkrumah is supplementing with GH¢20,000.
At the official launch of the project at a ceremony at Abenase, the President of the Ghanaian community in Belgium, Mr Kwaku Boamah Acheampong, through whose efforts the project took off, said the NGO and its development partners had undertaken similar projects at Kotokuom, Akyem Ayirebi, Bontodiase and Oda-Nkwanta, all in the Eastern Region.
The Board Chairman of COLISO, Mr Isaac Kwaku Asare, advised the people to offer communal labour to ensure the completion of the project in three months.
Pledge
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akyemansa, Mr Tom Budu, pledged GH¢20,000 from the assembly’s share of the common fund towards the Abenase project and three others being undertaken by the NGO in the district.
He said the Akyemansa District Assembly had provided Ayigbe Town, a suburb of Abenase, with a borehole, while it was also constructing two classroom blocks for the Abenase Presbyterian and Local Authority Junior High schools, which had been roofed and plastered.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah, for his part, advised the people to take good care of the project when it was completed to prolong its lifespan.

The Akyemansa District Director of Health Services, Madam Stella Konadu Owusu, spoke against open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse to prevent the outbreak of diseases such as typhoid fever and dysentery.
The Nifahene of Abenase, Nana Adu Acheampong, who chaired the function, was full of praise for COLISO and its development partners for providing the community with the project.
