We'll banish darkness in 2015 - President

President John Dramani Mahama has given the strongest indication yet of the government’s commitment to end the electricity load shedding this year.

"The year 2015 will be one filled with fruitfulness, joy, peace, good health and development.

"Now this is the interesting part. It will be one in which we banish darkness from our land and put an end to ‘dumsor’ forever, " he said at a watch night service at the Perez Dome of the Perez Chapel International at Dzorwulu in Accra

President Mahama, a member of the Assemblies of God Church , was at the Perez Chapel to worship with the congregation to usher in the New Year.

Prayers were said for the intervention of God to end the ‘dumsor dumsor’ phenomenon.

The service was interspersed with soothing music and backed by an incredibly penetrating sermon by the Presiding Bishop of the Church, Charles Agyin -Asare, which intermittently brought the fully -packed Perez Dome on its feet with the Hallelujah shouts echoing through the vast church hall.

Prophetic pronouncement

And when the President took over to address the congregation, he sent the huge gathering into loud applause by saying he was going to make "an interesting prophetic pronouncement.”

That “prophetic announcement" was that  this year will see the end to the load shedding.

Ghanaians have had to endure a biting load shedding for close to a year now, following the shortfall in power generation.

Currently, a load shedding timetable sees domestic consumers going off the national grid for 12 hours every two days.

In his quest to see the nation get over the problem, the President had decoupled power from the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, creating a new Ministry of Power to concentrate solely on how to get power to the people.

Hard work

Even as the President assured of the government's determination to turn things round for the nation, he demanded hard work from the people.

He said it was important that the people took advantage of the opportunities in the country to work to better their lives.

Sermon

In his sermon, Bishop Agyin-Asare quoted extensively from the Scriptures to explain that God detests corruption.

He told politicians to desist from diverting monies meant to uplift the lives of the underprivileged into their pockets saying God's anger would be visited on such unscrupulous persons.

The Bishop also spoke against the politics of insults saying it was important that politicians focused on issues.
