The project, which is being funded by the Delico Property Investments Ghana Ltd, includes the construction of an underpass which will provide access to the West Hill Mall.

When the Daily Graphic visited the construction site work was ongoing, the flow of traffic on the Accra-Cape Coast road was not interrupted.

Interchange

The multi-million interchange is aimed at easing traffic congestion when the mall becomes operational by November.  Work on the project is about 70 per cent complete.

The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Highways Authority, Mr Norbert Quarmor, paid an unannounced visit to the site last Wednesday, to assess the progress of work and to know when the work would be completed

The Project Manager of Diagonal Projects-Ghana Ltd, consultants of the contractors working on the project, Mr Walter Segbedzi, made these known, when he conducted Mr Quarmor and journalists round the project during the visit.

Mr Segbedzi said although mobilisation works began in January this year, work on site began effectively in May. He was confident that the contractors, Messrs High Brains Ltd, would complete work and hand over the project on schedule.

He said even though the rains were interrupting the work, the contractors had put in place measures such as working for longer hours to make up for the hours lost because of the rains.

He said the concrete works of the project were almost done with the completion of the decking of the Accra-Kasoa road, while work on the Kasoa-Accra side of the road, would be completed by early September.

Mr Segbedzi allayed public fears about the possible traffic hold up that may result when the mall became operational, assuring traffic-free movement at the interchange that would be facilitated by the underpass.

GHA commendation

Mr Quarmor expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and commended the contractors for the seriousness with which they were undertaking the project.

He said Messrs High Brains Ltd, a Ghanaian-owned company, deserved commendation because of the amount of work done within four months of commencement.

He said it was the first time a private company was building an interchange along a main highway in the country.

Mr Quarmor explained that construction of the interchange was part of the GHA’s conditions that allowed the West Hill Mall to operate. He explained further that the decision was necessitated by the severe traffic congestion that had become common at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, following the operation of the Accra Mall.
