World War 1 Centenary marked

The 69th Remembrance Day service was  last Monday marked across the country. This year’s celebration was also used to mark 100 years of the beginning of World War One.

From Tamale,  Samuel Duodu reports that a  parade made up of 170 strong security personnel drawn from the Six Garrison, Airborne, Air Force,  Police and Prisons, under the command of Flight Lieutenant  Ibrahim Anas Illiasu, took part in the Remembrance Day Parade held at the forecourt of the Veterans Village in Tamale.

Also on parade was a contingent of ex-servicemen.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, the Six  Garrison Commander, Air Commodore Griffith Evans, ex- Warrant Officer Class One  (WO1) Imoro Haruna and the Gulkpe Naa, Mahama Alhassan,  later laid wreaths on behalf of the people of Ghana, the security services, ex-servicemen and the chiefs and people of Ghana.

The memorial service was officiated by Rev. Captain Emmanuel Arthur and Mu-awiya Abubakari, the chaplain and chief Imam of the Sixth Garrison  respectively.

Tim Dzamboe reports from Ho that an open-air thanksgiving service was held at the Jubilee Park in Ho.

A parade was mounted by the security services drawn from the 66 Artillery Regiment, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Customs Divisions of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana National and Rescue Service(GNRS) and a detachment of Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) with music provided by the Ho Police Band.

Four wreaths were laid in remembrance of fallen heroes with the first being laid  by the Volta Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, on behalf of the President and the people of Ghana, while the second one was laid by the Commander of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Major Emmanuel Sampson, on behalf of security services.

The third wreath was laid on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Volta Region  by the paramount chief of the Ziavi Traditional Area, Togbe Kwaku Ayim IV,  with the fourth one laid on behalf of VAG by its regional chairman, Colonel Richard Bosrotsi (retd).

In Kumasi, the parade was marked with a wreath-laying ceremony, reports Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor.

It was made up of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Ghana Immigration Service, Prisons Service, Police Service,  Fire Service and the Customs Division of the GRA.

The veterans stole the show with their march past as the gathering applauded them loudest.

In attendance were all the service commanders, including the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the GAF, Brigadier General Joseph Adu-Boampong, and the Ashanti Regional Commander of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye.

The Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, laid a wreath on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, while Brig. Gen Joseph Adu-Boampong laid one on behalf of the GAF and other security services.

The  Bantamahene, Baafour Asare Owusu Amankwatiah V, laid one on behalf of the traditional authority of Ashanti and Ex WOII Agyeman Darkwah laid one on behalf of the veterans. 

Zadok Kwame Gyesi also writes from Sunyani that the Remembrance Day Service was held at the Cenotaph.

Seven contingents, comprising the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Veterans Association of Ghana and Customs Division of the GRA, formed the parade, which was commanded by Captain Augustine Bill.

The Binyon verses were read by the Brong Ahafo Chairman of VAG, WOI Konadu, in memory of the fallen soldiers. 

The Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, laid the first wreath on behalf of the government while Captain Nana Alhassan, who represented the GAF  laid the second wreath on behalf of the soldiers.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, laid the third wreath on behalf of the security services while the President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Pemampem Yaw Kagbrese V, laid a wreath on behalf of the chiefs and people of the region.

The Chairman of the VAG, WOI Konadu, laid one on behalf of the ex-servicemen.
