He has therefore, directed heads of various military garrisons in the country to make provisions in their budget to ensure the continued maintenance of government properties.

Mr Woyongo made the call yesterday when he toured various government properties under construction within the entire military base in the Greater Accra Region.

Purpose of the tour

The tour took the minister and his entourage to some garrisons, including the Military Academy and Training School (MATS) at Teshie, the Beijing Barracks, the Headquarters of the Southern Command and the new Labadi Villas.

The purpose of the tour, according to Mr Woyongo, was to ascertain the level of work being done on the various military projects in the region.

He said since accommodation had become a major problem hindering the operations of the military, there was the need for proper evaluation to be done in order to address the situation.

Exposures

At the Headquarters of the Southern Command, the minister expressed shock when he discovered that a 16-unit apartment that should have taken 18 months had been left uncompleted for more than seven years.

When the contractors mentioned lack of funds as the major reason for the delay, Mr Woyongo instructed them to undertake the necessary evaluation to determine the amount needed for the completion of the project.

Advice to the construction firms

Mr Woyongo asked construction firms working on various government projects in the country to ensure high standards in the execution of their assignments.

That, he said, was the only way for the government to continue to work with them, adding, “Your performance in the execution of contracts will determine the government’s response to doing business with your companies.”
