The doctors and dentists, who spent seven years in the medical school, were drawn from three institutions: the University of Ghana Medical School, the University of Ghana Dental School and the University for Development Studies School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Swearing the Hippocratic Oath, the doctors and dentists pledged, among other things, not to use their medical knowledge to break the laws of humanity.

Code of ethics

The Chairman of the MDC, Dr Eric Asamoa, who administered the oath, advised the new doctors and dentists to abide by the standards of the medical profession and encouraged them to be humble in order to acquire more knowledge from senior doctors and consultants.

“You must know by now that this is a noble profession and a code of ethics is associated with the profession. I urge you to stay focused in your medical practice,” he advised.

Dr Asamoa said the council was mandated by the Medical and Dental Act to secure, in the public interest, the highest standards in the practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana.

Dr Asamoa said the MDC’s function was to uphold and enforce standards using the disciplinary powers conferred on it.

Advice from senior doctors

A former Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Kenneth Sagoe, advised the doctors and dentists to make the needed sacrifices and added, “You need to make time for your patients and work extra hard to save lives.”

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira, advised them to accept postings to rural communities and also respect senior doctors and other health workers they worked with.

Advice from parents

Two parents who were given the platform to advise the newly qualified doctors and dentists asked them to respect the privacy of their patients and offer professional service to patients.

They also told the doctors and dentists to uphold the code of ethics of the medical profession and encouraged them to work hard in their respective medical units.
