MP donates medical equipment to health facilities

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the New Juaben South Constituency in the Eastern Region, Michael Okyere Baafi, has donated several medical equipment to two health facilities to improve healthcare services in the area.

The items are made up of a mobile digital x-ray machine, a babies’ resuscitation machine, a delivery set, an examination lamp (gooseneck), a three-seater link chair, an ambulance bag, an ECG machine, an oxygen concentrator, a haemoglobinometer, a flow splitter, a nebuliser, defibrillator, patient trolley or examination couch and pulse oximeter.

The rest are television sets, infrared thermometers, ultrasound machines, a vital sign monitor, adult weighing scale, a wheelchair, an instrument trolley, a bowl stand glucometer, glucometer strips, an adjustable hospital bedhead unit, a laboratory microscope, a BP apparatus and suction machine.

The beneficiary health facilities are the Eastern Regional Hospital at Koforidua, which has a mobile digital X-ray machine, while the rest of the equipment will be stocked in the new health facility at Koforidua Technical University (KTU).

Hospital request

The donation was in response to a request made to the MP by the management of the Eastern Regional Hospital for the mobile digital x-ray machine to replace the hospital's x-ray machine which broke down years ago, making it impossible for patients in need of X-ray to access it at the hospital.

Presenting the equipment at the premises of the two health facilities last Friday, Mr Baafi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, said he was concerned about the health status of his constituents who should have quality healthcare delivery, which could only be done with up-to-date medical equipment, hence the donation.

Lobby

The MP indicated that he personally lobbied for the items and appealed to all and sundry, especially those with the means to do likewise, since the government alone could not shoulder that responsibility.

"I was born at the Koforidua Regional Hospital years ago and I will ensure that it gets all the necessary equipment to enable the facility to function appropriately," Mr Baafi stated.

According to Mr Baafi, most of the equipment had been given to the health facility attached to the KTU because it lacked such items and expressed the hope that with the equipment available, that facility would function well without any hindrance.

For his part, the Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr Arko Akoto-Ampaw, who was excited about the gesture, commended the MP for such assistance.

He assured Mr Baafi that the mobile digital X-ray machine would be taken good care of and that it would also be put to good use. Dr Akoto-Ampaw appealed to the MP to provide the Regional Hospital with an MRI machine to take care of patients in dire need of its services.

He called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other well-to-do Ghanaians in the area to emulate the good example of Mr Baafi to assist the health facilities for the benefit of patients.

Number one

The Vice-Chancellor of KTU, Professor John Owusu, who had most of the medical equipment, thanked the MP for stocking the university's hospital with medical equipment to help make it a number one facility in the region.

He stated that the health of students and the university community was dear to the hearts of the management of KTU, which was why the hospital attached to the university was put up.

Professor Owusu indicated that students’ good health, as well as that of the university authorities, would enhance teaching and learning to enable students to achieve their schooling objectives.
