Bawumia accuses government of using state institutions to 'harass opponents'
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has accused the government of using state security agencies to harass political opponents.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 10, Dr Bawumia said he visited the MP after the incident and found him “in high spirits and undaunted.”
He urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain calm and law-abiding during this challenging time.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to rein in his security operatives immediately,” he wrote.
“State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents. Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy relies on due process and the rule of law.”
Mr Bawumia's visit comes after NIB officials attempted to arrest Rev. Fordjour at his residence on Wednesday, April 9.
Some party executives who rushed to the residence of the MP claimed that the operatives did not present a warrant or formal charges, which led to intervention by several MPs.
The attempted arrest is tied to recent claims made by Rev. Fordjour regarding two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport allegedly carrying drugs and cash.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed these allegations as unfounded.
