Bawumia pays tribute to fallen media practitioners, reaffirms commitment to press freedom

The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, paid a heartfelt tribute to media practitioners for their dedicated yet perilous service to the nation during his media engagement in Accra on Sunday.

In a poignant moment before the start of the event, Dr. Bawumia requested the audience to stand and observe a minute of silence in honor of media personnel who have passed away, particularly those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

"Your job is very important to sustaining our democracy, but it is also a very difficult job," Dr. Bawumia remarked. "Sometimes, in the process of doing your work, you even lose your life," he added, underscoring the risks faced by journalists.

After the observance of the minute's silence, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the significant role journalists play in the country and emphasized the need to protect and support them in their work. He reiterated his commitment to safeguarding press freedom and enhancing the practice of journalism to ensure that journalists continue to be vital contributors to the democratic process.

The Vice President also expressed his gratitude to the media for their strong turnout at the event, despite the short notice. "The notice was short, but you have responded. I'm particularly excited that media are represented from all 16 regions of our country," he said.

Dr. Bawumia concluded by recognizing the critical role of the media in holding leaders accountable and emphasized the importance of a strong partnership between the media and those seeking to lead. "The media plays an important role in our democratic process, and those seeking to lead must be prepared to partner with the media to ensure accountability," he stated.
