High Court strikes out Ashaiman MP's case against EC's mass registration exercise

The Adenta High Court has struck out a suit filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, Mr Ernest Norgbey, which was challenging the upcoming mass voters registration exercise.

The court struck out the suit in compliance with last week's Supreme Court judgement which upheld the EC’s decision to compile a new voters register and use the Ghana Card and Ghanaian passport as the source documents for the registration.

The legislator, Ernest  Norgbey wanted the High Court to declare that the EC did not have the mandate to compile a new register and that the current register until revoked by law was the legally acceptable register for the 2020 elections.

Supreme Court decision

Last Thursday, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the EC’s position not to use an existing voter ID card and birth certificate as source documents for the registration.

That was after the court dismissed a suit filed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which was seeking the inclusion of an existing voter ID card , and another suit by one Mark Takyi- Banson, who was seeking the inclusion of a birth certificate.

In its decision, the apex court ordered that any court in the country which is hearing a case challenging the upcoming voters registration exercise must rule on that case based on the decision by the apex court.

It was based on the order that the Adenta High Court struck out Mr Norgbey’s suit.
