Desist from arming land guards to protect lands — Thompson

The Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, has appealed to traditional rulers to desist from arming landguards to protect their lands.

He explained that the guns supplied by landowners to be used by land guards to protect their lands were the same guns used to attack residents, including the traditional rulers themselves, during the night.

Caretakers

Addressing a meeting of traditional rulers and resident associations at Weija yesterday, Mr Thompson said the traditional rulers and the municipal assembly would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to clear the area of all land guards and caretakers who were believed to also engage in armed robberies.

He said in future, landlords would have to sign an agreement with the traditional rulers and landowners to provide the names of the caretakers (popularly called ‘hwe so mame’) of their uncompleted structures to help curb the incidence of armed robbery.

He said the current level of lawlessness in the municipality, in the name of democracy, ought to stop since democracy was about responsibility and not lawlessness.

He, therefore, urged residents to contribute their quota to help the Neighbourhood Watch Committee to patrol their neighbourhoods.

Estate developers

He also appealed to the traditional rulers to not sell all the lands to estate developers without making provisions for lands to build social amenities such as schools, police stations and roads.

Mr Thompson said the municipality had secured funds to build a school for New Weija but because it was difficult finding land at New Weija, the school project had to be taken to a different community within the municipality even though new Weija was in dire need of more schools to serve the families flooding the area as residents.

Mr Thompson appealed to the traditional authorities to release land at Kokrobitey, Amanfrom and Tuba Kuwait for the construction of police posts to protect lives and property.

He said the spate of armed robberies and rape cases suggested that the armed robbers were within the communities and ought to be smoked out with the co-operation and information from the residents who know them.

The Chief of Ngleshie Amanfrom, Nii Kwashie Gborlor, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, urged people who had bought lands in the area to pay periodic visits to their lands to clear the bushes, which now serve as haven for armed robbers when being chased by the Neighbourhood Watch Committee.

He threatened that if the lands bought were not developed after a certain time, the landowners would take them over to be resold to people who are ready to develop the area.
