“If all of us are involved in corruption, how can we eradicate it?” he asked at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Institute of Chartered Accountants in Kumasi under the topic, “Can corruption be eradicated from Ghana?: The professionals' perspective”.

Role of accountants

He said accountants have a crucial role to play in tackling the canker because “they see more than the ordinary person”.'

According to him, accountants were privy to figures more than the ordinary person and indicated that if corruption was to be eradicated or minimised, a lot would depend on accountants.

He said corruption was everywhere and it did not need research to prove it, stressing that “the nation must tackle it with all the resources it has to save the future generation of an endangered society”.

Institutions

He said there was the need to strengthen the country's institutions, attack the menace with all the seriousness it deserved, as well as re-introduce civic education in schools.

Dr Mbawuni called for the enforcement of the anti-corruption law to ensure that culprits were not allowed to enjoy their ill-gotten money after jail.

Amakomhene

The Kumasi Amakomhene, Nana Adu Mensah, expressed regret that corruption had even found its way into the church, saying there was the need for a re-orientation and commitment to eradicate it.
