Ga West Assembly elects PM after four sittings

The Chief of Ofankor, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region, Nii Kortey Boi II, has been elected as the Presiding Member (PM) of the Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA).

Nii Boi got the mandate after the municipality had failed to elect a PM at four sittings since October 2015.

He ran unopposed after his contender, the Assembly member for the Amasaman Electoral Area, Mr Love Alister, backed out of the contest and supported him.

Election

The election was hed at the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the fourth assembly of the municipality in Accra on Tuesday.

Out of 38 members who exercised their franchise, 33 voted ‘yes,’ representing 87 per cent of ballots casted, while five voted ‘no’.

The Electoral Officer the GWMA, Nana Oduro Nimapau, declared Nii Boi as the PM- elect for obtaining at least two-thirds of the total valid votes cast.

Swearing-in
Subsequently, the Circuit Court Judge of Amasaman, Ms Ruby Aryeetey, swore in Nii Boi as the PM for the fourth session of the GWMA.

In his speech, Nii Boi called on his colleagues to work as a team in ensuring that the development goals of the municipality were achieved.

“Let us come together as members of this municipality and work as a team to ensure the needs of our constituents are addressed.

“As a chief, I have dedicated a building in my traditional as a meeting place for chiefs in this municipality where they will deliberate on critical issues that will help the development of this municipality,” he stated.

The municipality since October 2015
The municipality had not been able to elect a PM because none of the contestants could obtain at least two-thirds of the total valid votes.

The Deputy Regional Minister of Greater Accra, Mr Isaac Vanderpuye, urged the members of the municipality to be guided by faith as they steered the affairs of the assembly.

Present at the meeting were the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye; the Coordinating Director, Ms Felicia Dapaah, and the Member of Parliament for the Amasaman Constituency, Nii Okai Laryea.
