NDC condemns Democracy Hub protestors' remand

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the Accra Circuit Court's decision to remand 28 Democracy Hub protestors in police custody and 11 others in prison custody.

The party therefore demanded the immediate release of the protestors and discontinuation of their prosecution.

This move follows the protestors' three-day demonstration against the devastating illegal mining menace in the country.

Reports indicated that the arrests involved brutalities against innocent civilians, including minors, the aged and a four-month-old pregnant woman. Families and lawyers have complained about lack of access to the detainees, with some denied basic necessities such as food and water.

A statement issued and signed by the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, said: “It is totally reprehensible for the Police to subject civilian protestors to such barbaric and inhumane treatment."

"The right to protest is an inviolable fundamental human right and must not be inhibited by such acts of high-handedness," It said.

 The statement appealed to President Akufo-Addo to immediately instruct the Attorney-General to enter nolle prosequi in respect of the prosecution of the protestors who were only demanding accountability from the government.
