President Mahama attends ECOWAS Summit, Nairobi Day

President John Dramani Mahama left the Ghana on Thursday for a two-nation working visit to Kenya and Nigeria. 

In a letter dated December 10, 2025 and addressed to the Speaker of Parliament , which was read in the House Thursday by the First Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, the President said he would participate in the Nairobi Day celebration in Kenya on Friday.

He will then depart for Abuja, Nigeria, to take part in the 68th Ordinary Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, slated for Sunday, December 14, 2025.

The summit will bring together leaders from across West Africa to deliberate on key political, economic and security developments within the sub-region.

President Mahama is expected to return to the country on Monday, December 15, 2025.

Vice-President acts

In his absence, the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, will act in his stead in accordance with the Constitution.

“I am expected to return to Ghana on 15th December, 2025. In my absence, the Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman shall perform my functions in accordance with Article 68 of the Constitution,” the President told Parliament in line with Article 59 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the President to inform the Legislature any time he will be absent from Ghana.

The communication was copied to a number of relevant officeholders in line with standard governmental procedure.
