I have good ties with Kufuor - Akufo-Addo
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 elections, has said he has healthy ties with former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
“President Kufuor and I remain in regular communication with each other, and I make it a point to visit him every week,” he stressed.
He was reacting to running media reports and commentary by some members of the NPP and, political opponents that there was a fractured relationship between President John Agyekum Kufuor and himself.
In a statement from his office, Nana Akufo-Addo described the allegations as false.
He said the allegations that were making the rounds included the fact that President Kufuor did not support his presidential bids in 2008 and in 2012, and was not in support of his bid to lead the party into the 2016 general election either.
The statement further explained that in 2008, former President Kufuor supported fully his bid to become president of Ghana and gave him his unstinting assistance and “likewise, in 2012, the support I received from him was unflinching, as it was during the entire course of the now famous election petition.’’
“It remains my firm conviction that his two-term government, in which I had the privilege to serve as Attorney General and Foreign Minister, has been the best government this country has had, and I am proud to have been a member of it,’’ the statement stressed.
The statement said never had there been a point in time when former President Kufuor had done anything detrimental to Nana Akufo-Addo, as a person, or to the party with him as its presidential candidate.
As far as the 2016 election was concerned, the statement pointed out that President Kufuor had made it clear to all and sundry that he did not support any particular candidate but would work to help whoever emerged from the presidential primary as the party’s candidate.
According to the statement, those false allegations did not bode well for the internal cohesion of the party, and pleaded with all members who had been fed with those untruths to desist from propagating them any further as such unguarded pronouncements could give opponents of the party comfort for their non-performance.
